Monroe Community College
On behalf of MCC’s Pre-Collegiate Programs, we are pleased that Rochester AmeriCorps
has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Kate Smith Marhatta Award.
This award was initiated in 2007 to recognize those who give outstanding support
to the Upward Bound, the Liberty Partnerships Program, and the Science and Technology
Entry Program at MCC. Past awardees include Kristen Reed (MCC Purchasing, 2008),
Debra Dwyer (MCC Education, 2009), and Paul Lucas (MCC Controller’s Office, 2009).
A perpetual plaque hangs in the Pre-Collegiate suite at DCC with the names of all
winners.
The Rochester AmeriCorps was selected for this award in recognition of an outstanding
collaboration that has led not only to the Pre-Collegiate programs becoming host
sites for AmeriCorps volunteers, but also to the creation of the Pre-Collegiate
Service Scholars club. In the four months since its founding, youth in the Pre-Collegiate
Service Scholars club have completed nearly 1,000 hours of community service.
We are thankful to Rochester AmeriCorps for supporting the services that MCC’s Pre-Collegiate
Programs provide to area youth. We also credit Rochester AmeriCorps role-modeling
the spirit and value of service to our groups.
