Jumpstart, an early literacy nonprofit, needs your help to create valuable program materials for our Readers Program. Our curriculum-based activities accompany each of our children’s storybooks, and are an integral part of the Jumpstart program model. To create these valuable classroom materials, we rely almost entirely on the volunteers like you. In making our books exciting and more interactive for our students, jobs include: coloring, cutting, gluing, and laminating! Your time and help will directly allow us to provide quality literacy programs to preschool children in underserved NYC communities. Our next materials creation volunteer event will be Wednesday, January 27 from 6-8pm. We look forward to your participation! Please contact nycvolunteers@jstart.org to sign up, or for more information on volunteering with Jumpstart! Thank you, in advance, for your interest and support for early literary.

Event Description: Harborfest is a 4-day/night admission free festival held annually during the last full weekend of July. This year’s festival is July 28-31 and will feature live music and entertainment on three different stages, the Family Park at East Park, featuring the Children’s Musical along with programming and activities for families. Riverwalk East will again feature our Arts and Crafts venue and the Historic Maritime District (West 1st and Lake Streets) will be home to the Go Green Expo. Every year, in addition to the great music and entertainment featured at Harborfest, an educational cultural component/theme is chosen; last year it was France, this year it’s Great Britain/England. The 25th Anniversary of Harborfest will be in 2012, which coincidently is also the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. The French and British were the two main adversaries because of trade restrictions the British introduced to impede trade between the French and United States during the early 1800’s. Thus the cultural theme for Harborfest has been France and Great Britain the past two years, all leading up to the 2012 festival and the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. The theme is used throughout the festival in various ways, including the children’s parade held on the Friday of Harborfest, the festival’s annual poster, program and merchandise, as well as music and programming.

Where: The office is located on 41 Lake Street, in the McCrobie Building, in Oswego, NY, but Harborfest venues are spread out over six locations along the Oswego waterfront. Positions: It takes over 500 volunteers to help make Harborfest a success. For more information, or to download an application, log onto our website at www.oswegoharborfest.com. You can also request more information and an application by contacting Michael Petrilli at 315-342-7113. Some benefits of volunteering are learning new skills, meeting new people, building a stronger résumé, and the best reason…it’s FUN!

Special Instructions: The sooner you can get yoour applications in the better. Training sessions will be held for all volunteers on Tuesday, July 12; Monday, July 18, and Wednesday, July 20th...we will start the short intro promptly at 5pm.
