The New York State Commission collaborates with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), the NYS Commission on Quality
of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities (CQCAPD) and the NYS Office of
Children & Family Services’ Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH)
to provide technical assistance regarding the provision of reasonable accommodations
and purchase or loan of materials and equipment for accessibility. The National
Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) will provide training and technical assistance
to build state and local partnerships between the commission and the disability
community with the aim of increasing the participation of people with disabilities
in civic engagement through AmeriCorps and other community service programs.
With the goal of aggressively performing outreach to increase the numbers of national service members and community volunteers through recruitment and placement, the Commission intends
to reach out not only to programs, but also communicate to the individual AmeriCorps
members directly to inform them of the availability of support for reasonable accommodations
and materials and equipment for accessibility.
We are exploring ways to more effectively use this website for inclusive marketing,
recruitment and outreach, to specifically increase the participation of more individuals
with disabilities as volunteers and service members.
